Staying Well with Selskar College

This current lockdown has hit us all particularly hard, so here in Selskar College we want to remind you all to make sure you are all minding yourselves and staying well.

There are 5 key areas of wellbeing and over the next few weeks we are challenging you all to take part in some of our Wellbeing activities.

5 Key Areas of Wellbeing:

Connect

Make time each day to connect with people around you. Family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues. While we can’t do this physically at the moment, the world of technology means we can still connect virtually with those that matter most to us. By staying connected and nurturing these relationships we feel happier and more secure, giving us a better sense of purpose.

Be Active

Look for ways to be active everyday. Go for a run, cycle or short walk. Just get outside. Discover a physical activity you enjoy that suits your lifestyle and fitness level. Research has shown that being physically active can improve your mental health and wellbeing.

Take Notice

Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Pay attention to the present moment – to your thoughts, feelings and the world around you.

Keep Learning

Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for a new course. Cook a new recipe. Setting yourself and new challenge and learning a new skill will increase your confidence which can improve your mental health and wellbeing.

Give

Giving to others is good for you. Do something nice for someone else. Thank someone. Volunteer your time. Seeing yourself and your happiness linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and create connectedness with the people around you.

We encourage everyone in our school community, parents, students, staff and those of you in the wider community, to get involved and try out some of the activities in our Wellbeing campaign and to share your experiences with us. Upload a photo in the comments section on Facebook or email maireadfoley@wwetb.ie or kierankinsella@wwetb.ie

Any students who send us a photo will be entered into a raffle at the end of the month.

Day 7 (19/01/2021) of Staying Well with Selskar College

Last week we encouraged you to Be Active and get out every day for 30 minutes of walking. This week, Keep Learning and try a new walking route within your 5km radius.

For those of you struggling to find motivation, Dr Ciara Kelly’s #100daysofwalking initiative on Instagram and Facebook might help motivate you.

For anyone wanting to push themselves that little bit more, the Couch to 5k app is a great way of starting to run!

“Walking regularly can improve self-perception and self-esteem, mood and sleep quality, and it reduces stress anxiety and fatigue.”

Day 8 of Staying Well with Selskar College

In the current climate, it can often be easiest to focus on the things that are going wrong but this can have a negative impact on our mental health.

Your challenge today is to Take Notice of all the things you have, to be thankful for. Start a journal and write down three things every day that you are thankful for. This also might be a fun way to Connect with your family and make it a house activity every morning or evening.

“Research shows that gratitude journaling can lower stress, help you sleep better and may even reduce the risk of heart disease.”

Don’t forget to share your experiences with us by uploading a photo here or emailing one to maireadfoley@wwetb.ie or kierankinsella@wwetb.ie Any students who participate will go into a draw at the end of the month!

Day 9 of Staying Well with Selskar College

Giving to others can also benefit our own mental health by boosting our mood. You can give time as well as money. This week maybe check in with an elderly neighbour (from a distance) and see if they need groceries collected or their dog walked (Be Active).

This could be the only time in the week that they get to Connect with other people!

We have a number of audiobooks available in our virtual library https://tinyurl.com/selskarlibrary or you can try apps like Audible or Spotify.

This is a great way to Keep Learning and you have the added benefit of being able to listen when you are out walking!

This could also be a great activity to Connect with your family, escape screens (phones, television, laptops, playstation) and get some fresh air!

Being able to Give back to our community can have a big impact on our mental health.

“Giving has been proven to decrease blood pressure and reduce stress. This reduction promotes longer life and better health.”

Why not get involved in some of the local, virtual fundraisers being organised at the moment such as the Wexford Credit Union Virtual 5km Night Run. More information can be found at https://www.popupraces.ie/race/wexford-credit-union-night-run-2021-virtual-5k/ with proceeds going to the Irish Kidney Association and High Meadows Community Hub.

Day 15 of Staying Well with Selskar College

Today, set aside some time to Connect with someone you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while.

Ring them or better yet, video call on Facebook, Whatsapp or Skype.

“People who feel more connected to others have lower levels of anxiety and depression. Moreover, studies show they also have higher self-esteem, greater empathy for others, are more trusting and cooperative and, as a consequence, others are more open to trusting and cooperating with them.”
